This is a lovely tourmaline and smoky quartz specimen, with just speckles of hyalite opal here and there if you hit it with the UV. The pictures came out a bit red-toned but it's a traditional smoky quartz gray.
Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz crystal. Aluminum molecules have bonded in the crystal lattice and, with natural irradiation, create a dark grey or brown colour. Smoky quartz often forms in conjunction with other members of the quartz family, like amethyst and clear quartz. Tourmaline is a complex silicate, compounding elements like aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, and/or potassium. It forms in a variety of colours and is often referred to as Schorl when it is very dark brown to black.
Smoky quartz and black tourmaline are both said to be exceptionally protective and capable of purifying negative energy.
