This is a very cool and unusual piece of polychrome jasper from Madagascar. This piece is quiet and subtle. A wide swath of earthy red-brown is accented by a large patch of the rarely encountered dragonscale, short sharp bands curved like scales. This piece is large and interesting but also subtle and understated.
Polychrome jasper is also known as desert jasper. It is a form of chalcedony, in which quartz incorporates minerals in patches of vibrant, dramatic colour.
