Obsidian is a naturally formed glass, a result of volcanic magma cooling too rapidly to allow the formation of crystals. The large streaks of brown in mahogany obsidian are caused by trace amounts of iron present during formation. As a glass, fractured obsidian is often razor sharp and should be handled with great care. 

Mahogany obsidian is said to provide protection and help keep one grounded. It is said to provide inner strength and facilitate growth and transformation.
