Garnet is a silicate mineral, usually red but occurring in a variety of colours. Garnet is generally quite hard and is the only magnetic naturally transparent gemstone. Pyrite is a striking, shiny gold coloured mineral that is the result of iron and sulphur bonding. It sparks when struck, and often forms in cubes or other interesting sharp-sided shapes.
