This is a great carnelian sphere. While some carnelian can be a single homogenous colour, this sphere is typical of Madagascar with its dramatic white splotches and streaks on an intensely varied brown and red background.
Carnelian is a red to brown to almost black variety of chalcedony, which is quartz whose crystal formations are too small to be seen by the naked eye. Its red colouration comes from included iron oxide and it may also include areas of white or clear quartz.
