This is a great carnelian sphere. While some carnelian can be a single homogenous colour, this sphere is typical of Madagascar with a dramatic white white diamond and red-on-white banding on a dark and moody brown and red background. It has a cool strip of dark dendritic veins.
Carnelian is a red to brown to almost black variety of chalcedony, which is quartz whose crystal formations are too small to be seen by the naked eye. Its red colouration comes from included iron oxide and it may also include areas of white or clear quartz.
