This is a very interesting ammonite half from Madagascar. The interior face has been polished and the exterior has a couple of small opalescent flashes. It presents rich earth tones, quartzy chambers, and a few little sparkly vugs.

Ammonites are now-extinct, squid-like sea mollusks with coiled shells. They resembled the modern nautilus, though they were more closely related to squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. The shell was divided into chambers by thin walls, and the ammonite could control its buoyancy by filling the chambers with water or gas. Ammonites underwent a typical fossilization process, in which their aragonite shells were covered by sediment and gradually replaced by deposits of calcite, pyrite, or silica.

Ammonites are recognized in many cultures as mystical icons. They have a unique connection to both the stability of the earth and the motion of the sea. They are seen to represent stability during change and safety during progress. Their perfect spiral shape is thought to encourage the flow of positive, cleansing energy and their ancient nature associates them with wisdom and past lives.
